The Wonders of Routine
January 24, 2008
Welcome, new visitor! My name is Ari, the man behind Aries9. Here I share my thoughts on music and life, so you can get to know me and my music. Thanks for visiting!
Today was my third day at my new day job.
I had a “vacation” of sorts for a month. Not working, or more importantly, not having any routines or structures to my days, was actually not enjoyable. Moving is very hard work, taking care of little kids consistently so, and when they’re sick it’s worse. I’m not afraid of hard work but I don’t do well with working hard without structures.
In my experience, the biggest challenge of self-employment or owning your business is in imposing that structure upon yourself, when nobody else demands it out of you. It’s easy when a job needs you to clock your time in between certain times. Most of us simply don’t possess the kind of self-control to do that without external forces, including yours truly. But I’m getting better and better as I get older.
Actually, with a day job I have less time to work on my music or my music business. But I am more productive when I have limits and structures. With a new job, and a new home, I am making up a new structure. One that keeps good parts of what I had, while improving on bits and pieces to make it better.
Habit is an act you do routinely without thinking about it. A good routine, a good habit can do wonders to our lives.
I’m trying to make the most of this change, this occasion to tweak and make up good routines. Once the machine’s oiled and rolling, then I simply ride it.
